The beavers had a restoration project going for 1,000 years and nobody checked the minutes.

California brought back beavers for the first time in 70 years, and the results are already amazing

Tule River tribal member Kenneth McDarment noticed a 500-to-1,000-year-old beaver pictograph in a Sierra Nevada rock shelter while the tribe searched for drought solutions, and took it as a sign to bring the animal back. California launched its first beaver restoration program since the 1950s in 2021 with the Tule River Tribe and Maidu Summit Consortium. Seven beavers were released at Tásmam Koyóm in Plumas County on October 18, 2023, and by September 2024 the total reached 28 across five sites. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2196 in 2024 making the program permanent.
