On a stormy August afternoon, an elderly driver lost control of her vehicle on the 1900 block of North Prospect Avenue in Champaign, Illinois, and it sank up to its roof in a flooded retention pond. Three community members swam out to help and four Champaign Police officers joined the rescue; the 90-year-old driver was pulled out safely. On September 29, the three civilians received Community Lifesaving Awards and the officers received the Chief's Challenge Coin. The driver attended and thanked them; her son, a US Coast Guard officer, also praised the rescuers.
