Scientists Find the Secret to Conservation Success: Ask the Locals First

University of Sydney researchers led by Dr. Bing Lin reviewed more than 70 studies of conservation success stories across Papua New Guinea coral reefs, West African chimpanzee forests, Canadian grizzly bear ranges, and Tasmanian albatross colonies. They found three shared factors: local knowledge valued alongside scientific data, communities at the center of decision-making, and management tailored to local social and environmental conditions. The review is the first to unite these unrelated bright spots into a single framework, published in a statement from the Thriving Oceans Research Hub. Co-author Professor Josh Cinner said the patterns offer grounds for optimism.
