Nikon Small World Winner Disqualified for AI Use
Nikon disqualified Ning Xu of Tsinghua University from its Small World in Motion competition after an investigation concluded his winning video of beating cilia violated contest rules. Researchers flagged structural abnormalities and AI watermarks in the source files; Xu said he used AI only to distinguish and visualize features in reconstructed grayscale images, not to generate the cilia or their motion. Nguyen Nam Nhat of Vietnam was named the new winner with a video of a roundworm and a single-celled organism.
