Marine biologist Jérôme Mallefet's team examined 25,000 deep-sea sea spider specimens from the Eastern Australian Abyss, up to 16,000 feet down, checking for bioluminescence. Poking them produced a slight glow; potassium chloride triggered a bigger one. Two species glowed, three fluoresced under ultraviolet and blue light. The light sits on the underside of their legs, where a sea spider's digestive system runs. Species include Colossendeis tasmanica, with legs up to 25 centimeters.
