Astronomers Spotted a 'Bear' on Mars
NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, flying 251 kilometres above the southern highlands of Mars in December 2022, photographed a hill that resembles a bear's head: two craters as eyes, a pale V-shaped collapse ridge as a snout, and a circular fracture as an outline. HiRISE team lead Alfred McEwen attributes the features to ordinary geology — a filled impact crater and a possible volcanic or mud vent. The effect is pareidolia, the human brain's evolved tendency to find faces in random patterns.
