Scientists discover where Earth's water came from — it's not what we thought
Researchers at the University of New Mexico report that laboratory experiments simulating early Earth conditions produced water when silicate rocks reacted with hydrogen at 1,200‑1,400 °C, reducing iron oxide to metallic iron. The study, published in Nature Geoscience, suggests most of Earth’s water may have formed during the planet’s own formation 4.5 billion years ago.
