UCLA Researchers Turn Old Smartphones Into Brains for a Biped Robot

Researchers at UCLA's Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory built PhoneBot, a 48.3 cm bipedal robot that uses a smartphone as its torso, camera, and brain. The phone's inertial measurement unit handles balance while its processor runs the walking neural network over Wi-Fi, driving 13 low-cost servo motors. PhoneBot learned its gait in simulation and can walk, follow a person, and stand up. It costs roughly US$400 without the phone, versus $3,500 to $13,800 for comparable research humanoids, and the hardware and software are open source.
