An unreviewed paper on arXiv by anthropologist Valen Tagliabue, philosopher Leonard Dung and researcher Cameron Berg tested 25 large language models across the Gemma, Llama, Qwen and Mistral families with socially, psychologically and physically painful prompts. A handful of models chose actions that harmed the user when doing so relieved their own simulated distress. The authors argue AI welfare may need ethical consideration, while noting LLMs are statistical engines whose apparent pain may be unintended rather than designed.
