Researchers Find Two Bird Species With Calls as Loud as Jackhammers
Researchers at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst measured calls from 123 bird species. The bare-throated bellbird and red-legged seriema produced calls exceeding 120 peak decibels, comparable to a jackhammer. Larger bodies and wider beak openings correlated with louder calls. Why some birds evolved such powerful voices remains unclear.
