Footage: New Atlas
Researchers at Macquarie University and UNSW Canberra used high-speed video and micro-computed tomography to observe a honey bee's stinger pumping venom into a gel. The study revealed that two flexible valves inside the stinger act like miniature pistons, moving in opposite directions to force venom into tissue. This detailed observation of the two-stroke pump mechanism provides new insights into bee biology and potential applications for medical micropumps.
