Seabirds racing home over the ocean can get jet-lagged
A new study published in Science reveals that Manx shearwaters experience jet lag during long transatlantic flights. Analyzing 20 years of GPS data from 1,045 birds, researchers found that the seabirds' internal clocks fall out of sync with local time. This desynchronization skews their sun-based navigation compass, causing them to veer off course while returning to their coastal nesting burrows in the UK and Ireland.
