'Carnival of the Nearly Extinct Animals' celebrates species with song
Composer Stephanie Ann Boyd's Carnival of the Nearly Extinct Animals pairs music with puppetry, dance and spoken word across 14 movements covering 13 species, from tigers and polar bears to Hawai'i's endangered kāhuli snails. It premieres Sept. 18–19 at the Hawaii Theatre in Honolulu, produced by Ocean Music Action with the Hawaii Theatre Center. Hawai'i Symphony Orchestra musicians, Ballet Hawaii dancers and Obie-winning puppeteer Greg Corbino join narrator Moses Goods, who reads poems by local students. Boyd wrote it as a sister piece to Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals.
