In five years: 'my muon camera got a virus from a shady website'
A laser just photographed objects through six feet of concrete
Physicists at Romania's Extreme Light Infrastructure Nuclear Physics facility fired the world's most powerful laser to generate a beam of high-energy muons and image a stack of lead blocks through several meters of concrete, with detectors parked in a van on the far side. The team, led by researchers from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Colorado State University, calls it the first muongraph produced artificially by laser rather than by cosmic rays. The grainy images, posted as a preprint on arXiv, point toward portable scanners for inspecting rocket hulls, shipping containers and ancient stone foundations.
