Wisconsin's Redgranite Correctional Institution is running the Refuge for Growth, Change and Inspiration Monarch Program, launched in 2025 by Carrie Jahnke and now in its second year. About 20 inmates raise monarch caterpillars sent from nearby breeding center Monarch Watch from June through September, changing leaves, logging egg data and tagging the butterflies before they fly south to Mexico. The program handled 100 caterpillars this year, up from 60, and the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin helped build the lepidopterum.
