Researchers at RMIT University in Australia have 3D-printed a titanium alloy lattice that floats, despite titanium being about 4.4 times denser than water. The team printed hollow Ti-6Al-4V beams in a 4x4x4 array of 10mm cells, filled them with polyurethane foam, and found the structure stayed buoyant even after cracks formed and a lattice layer broke apart. The work, published in Advanced Materials, is aimed at buoys, floating sensors and offshore platforms, with next steps being larger-scale tests in real seawater.
