NASA Rover Captures Striking Image of Dawn on Mars
NASA released a Curiosity rover photo of Martian dawn, taken about an hour after sunrise and showing sunlight on jagged, wind-carved cliffs in the distance. The rock layer, called yardangs, formed roughly 3 billion years ago and spans about 10 miles across the northwestern slopes of 5-km-tall Mount Sharp. Curiosity landed in 2012 in Gale Crater and has since climbed about 1 km in elevation, the most ever on Mars. NASA hopes the rover reaches the yardang layer in 2027 or 2028.
