Apate's AI agents go undercover as scam victims to bait fraudsters
Apate.ai, an Australian startup founded in 2024 out of Macquarie University research, deploys thousands of AI agents that pose as scam victims to bait fraudsters on calls, messages, emails and social media. Its fleet has logged 2.5 million conversations, wasting roughly 17 years of scammers' time, while extracting bank accounts, crypto wallets, phone numbers and impersonated brands. Apate feeds that intel to banks, telecoms and government agencies, and pitches at TechCrunch Disrupt's Startup Battlefield 200 in San Francisco.
