an open-world game where you can't leave your house

Dan Houser on leaving Rockstar, starting an absurd new company and why he doesn't play open-world games anymore

Dan Houser, co-founder and former head writer of Rockstar Games, left the company in 2020 and launched Absurd Ventures in 2023 with longtime writing partner Jeffrey "Lazlow" Jones. The studio is developing two untitled games — an open-world comedy and a dystopian sci-fi about a sentient rogue AI — alongside three transmedia properties: "A Better Paradise," "American Caper" and the "Absurdaverse," rolled out via graphic novels, podcasts, books and animated series. Houser told Variety's "Strictly Business" podcast he has avoided the 27-minute Netflix preview of Grand Theft Auto VI to protect his creative focus.
