China announces candidate for WHO chief position

China nominated Song Li, a maternity health expert, as its candidate for World Health Organization director general on Thursday. The announcement follows the United States' withdrawal from the agency and precedes the August 2027 end of Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus's term. Song will compete against six other candidates from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Spain, Indonesia, and Botswana for the leadership position.
