Ex-BND chief August Hanning arrested on suspicion of espionage

German police arrested August Hanning, 80, former president of the BND, at his home in Nordwalde near Münster early Wednesday on suspicion of treasonous espionage. Prosecutors say his former chief of staff, Manfred D., fed him roughly 2,000 classified documents, including chancellor's-office briefings on Iran's nuclear program and the Russian military, in exchange for money until at least 2022. A federal judge issued an arrest warrant; a second ex-BND official was also detained in Bavaria.
