Song of the Whale Research Vessel Proved Whales Don’t Need to Die for Science
The Song of the Whale, a 70-foot sailing research vessel built in 2004, has studied whales using acoustic monitoring since 1987 without killing them. In 2023 it surveyed nearly 15,800 kilometers off the U.S. eastern seaboard, recording 25 North Atlantic right whale sightings of at least 32 individuals, including two mother-calf pairs, among a population of fewer than 350.
