Pope diagnosed with lung cancer but had successful surgery, Vatican says

Pope Leo XIV underwent successful surgery at Rome's Gemelli Hospital to remove a lower lobe of his right lung after being diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma. The 71-year-old pontiff, who announced the procedure from St Peter's Square, is recovering in his hospital room. Vatican officials confirmed the tumor was detected early and cleared his schedule until October 20 to allow for rest before his planned trip to Latin America.
