Nearly forgotten languages are finding new words for Colombia's dragonflies

Researchers with the Dragones Guainía project, led by biodiversity lead Yiselle Cano, began cataloging dragonflies and damselflies in Guainía, eastern Colombia, where the scientific record listed only about 10 species; working with Indigenous communities, they have now recorded close to 120. The team then held workshops sharing the finds with residents, some of whom speak no Spanish, and Tucano, Curripaco and Puinave participants set out to recover ancestral names for the insects — or invent new ones, since Puinave is itself at risk of disappearing. Communities are now building their own dragonfly monitoring to track the health of the water the insects depend on, under pressure from mining, deforestation, waste and tourism.
