The planet's been running this experiment for 50 years. Latin America just got the results first.

Wildlife Populations Fell 95% in Latin America and the Caribbean Over the Last 50 Years | REPORT

The Living Planet Index 2026, released this week by WWF and compiled by the Zoological Society of London, found that monitored vertebrate populations in Latin America and the Caribbean fell 95% on average between 1970 and 2022, against a global average of 73%. The report draws on 35,803 population trends across 5,790 mammal, bird, amphibian, reptile and fish species, with freshwater species declining most. Tigers, green turtles and bluefin tuna are recovering where countries coordinated conservation. WWF's Aimée Leslie Bogantes urged governments to cut fossil fuel subsidies and redirect financing toward renewable energy and natural infrastructure.
