The Strange Afterlife of Oscar Wilde's Library Card
The Strange Afterlife of Oscar Wilde's Library Card
The British Library reinstated Oscar Wilde's library card in 2025, 130 years after revoking it following his 1895 conviction for gross indecency. The institution presented the renewed card to Wilde's grandson, Merlin Holland, on what would have been the author's 171st birthday. This gesture acknowledges the historical exclusion of the writer, whose works remain central to the library's collection of his writings and letters.
