A donor heart between cities used to race the clock; now it just commutes, with a tiny motor and a warm blanket.

London, Ont. hospital completes first Canadian heart-in-a-box transplant

London Health Sciences Centre performed Canada's first "heart in a box" transplant, using a portable perfusion device that keeps a donor heart beating and warm in transit instead of cold and still on ice. The technology extends the organ's usable window, letting teams reach donors farther away and take on hearts that might have been rejected before. The patient is recovering, and the hospital is preparing to offer the procedure to more recipients.

75-year bloom and the octopus still picked the wrong plus-one

Why Is This Octopus Hitching a Ride on a Dolphin?

A citizen scientist photographed a common octopus clinging to the fin of a Risso's dolphin off southwest England. Warming waters have produced the region's biggest octopus bloom in 75 years, drawing the dolphins closer to shore from deeper water to feed. Risso's dolphins eat squid and octopus, so researchers believe the encounter was a predation attempt, not a friendship. Scientists want more photos to track how the bloom reshapes the marine ecosystem.
